Servo drives, amplifiers and VFDs repaired at the component level

When a drive faults, the axis stops. AST repairs servo drives, servo amplifiers, spindle drives, power supply modules and variable frequency drives from all major manufacturers. Every unit gets a full component-level inspection, and we quote the repair on what we actually find.

After repair, drives are tested on OEM equipment and to OEM specifications before they ship. We also stock hundreds of new and remanufactured drives when replacing is faster.

  • Same-day rush evaluations
  • OEM components used in every repair
  • Power stage, control board and feedback circuits all inspected
  • Firmware and parameters kept where the drive allows it
  • Exchange units available on many FANUC, Yaskawa and Allen-Bradley drives
  • 1-year in-service warranty

What we check and replace

Most drive failures come from a small set of components that age with heat and switching. We inspect and, where needed, replace:

  • IGBT and power transistor modules
  • DC bus capacitors
  • Rectifier diodes and pre-charge circuits
  • Gate driver and control boards
  • Switch-mode power supplies on the board
  • Cooling fans and heatsinks
  • Current sensors and feedback interface circuits
  • Connectors, relays and fuses

What to send with the drive

The alarm number shown on the drive display or CNC screen, the axis it was on, and what happened just before it failed. If a motor or cable shorted, tell us. We'll check the motor too, because a failed motor can take out a new drive.

Process

How we repair a servo drive

  1. Incoming inspection

Visual inspection for burn marks, contamination and damaged parts. We record the alarm history and serial data.

  2. Static testing

Power devices, capacitors and the DC bus are tested before the drive is powered, so a fault can't cause more damage.

  3. Component repair

Failed power and control components are replaced with OEM parts. Aged capacitors and fans are replaced as standard where needed.

  4. Powered testing

The drive is powered up on our test equipment and the control, I/O and communication functions are checked.

  5. Load test with a motor

The drive runs a motor under load to confirm current regulation and feedback before it is cleared to ship.

Diagnosis

Drive alarms and their usual causes

Drive faults we diagnose

  • Overcurrent and IPM / IGBT alarms
  • DC bus overvoltage or undervoltage
  • Overheat and fan alarms
  • Feedback or encoder communication alarms
  • Ground fault alarms
  • No display or no power-up
  • Intermittent faults that clear on reset

Common causes

  • Aged DC bus capacitors
  • Failed power modules after a short or surge
  • Clogged heatsinks and failed fans
  • Contamination from coolant, oil or metal dust
  • Damaged connectors and cables
  • A shorted motor or cable downstream

Questions

Servo Drive & Amplifier Repair FAQ

What's the difference between a servo drive and a servo amplifier?

They do the same job: they take power and a command signal and drive a servo motor. FANUC and some other makers call them amplifiers; Allen-Bradley, Yaskawa and others call them drives or servopacks. We repair both.

Do you repair VFDs and spindle drives?

Yes. We repair variable frequency drives, including Allen-Bradley PowerFlex, and spindle drives and spindle amplifier modules.

Will my parameters be kept?

Where the drive stores them on board and the memory isn't damaged, yes. Always back up your parameters before sending a drive if you can.

How fast can a drive be repaired?

Rush evaluations are done the same day. Repair time depends on the fault and parts. If you can't wait, ask about an exchange or remanufactured unit from stock.

What warranty do repaired drives carry?

A one-year in-service warranty.

Line down? Send us the part number.

Rush evaluations are completed the same day. Most quotes are based on the damage we find, not the price of a new unit.
